Straight Up is a popular but short lived Canadian television series produced by Back Alley Films. Although critically acclaimed, the show only ran for 13 episodes on CBC Television from 1996 to 1998. Set in Toronto, the show dealt with the gritty problems of teenagers living in an urban environment. Rather than focusing on a core group of principal characters, each episode would typically feature a different set of the ensemble teenage cast. Initially, although the character relationships were intertwined, each episode would feature a self-contained plot usually involving only a few of the characters. However during the second season, there was a continuing story arc involving a murder over multiple episodes. Although Straight Up only lasted for two seasons, it spawned the spin off series Drop the Beat which followed the characters of Jeff and Dennis as DJs at a campus radio station.

Shawn Spencer ist selbsternannter Detektiv. Von seinem Vater Henry, einem angesehenen Polizisten, wurde er trainiert, sich alle Dinge in seinem Umfeld genau einzuprägen, seien sie auch noch so klein oder unwichtig. Über seine Erziehung unzufrieden kehrte Shawn seinem Vater jedoch den Rücken. Nach einigen misslungenen Lebensabschnitten erkennt er seine Gabe, ungelöste Fälle der Polizei mithilfe seines fotografischen Gedächtnisses lösen zu können. Dabei gibt Shawn aber stets vor ein Hellseher zu sein. Nachdem er der Polizei in mehreren Fällen helfen konnte und diese ihn immer wieder als Unterstützung anfordert, gründet Shawn schließlich mit seinem Freund Burton Guster eine eigene Detektei.

Die Geschichten, die in den Filmen erzählt werden, beziehen ihre Spannung aus den widersprüchlichen Charakteren der beiden: Dog ist optimistisch und wenig intelligent, während Cat deutlich klüger ist, aber auch pessimistischer. Hauptgegner der beiden sind die Greasers, eine dreiköpfige Bande von Hunden. Ihr Boss ist Cliff (Clifford), die beiden anderen Mitglieder sind der dumme Hund Lube (Ignatius Lubowitsch) und die Hündin Shriek.
