Waldo Pepper (Robert Redford) ist ein Stunt-Pilot, der gerne mit erfundenen Geschichten über Luftkämpfe im Ersten Weltkrieg angibt, den er in Wahrheit nur als Fluglehrer erlebt hat. Bei seiner Tour durch das Land trifft er auf den Konkurrenten Axel Olsson (Bo Svenson), nachdem er diesen durch einen Fehler seinerseits zu einer Bruchlandung im Dorfteich gezwungen hat. Mary Beth (Susan Sarandon) kann die beiden beiden Streithähne beruhigen. Durch die gemeinsame Fliegerleidenschaft werden die beiden schließlich zu Freunden und arbeiten schließlich gemeinsam für den Flugzirkus von Dr. Dillhoefer (Philip Bruns). Doch als es eines Tages zu einem tragischen Vorfall kommt, verliert Waldo seine Pilotlizenz und versucht fortan unter neuem Namen sein Glück als Stuntpilot in Hollywood. Dort bekommt er bei den Dreharbeiten zu einem Film, der die Luftkämpfe des Ersten Weltkrieges porträtiert, die Chance zu beweisen, was er wirklich drauf hat.

Hutter, Judith, Hetty and Princess Wah-Tah return to the ark, where they ate attacked by the waiting Hurons and Hetty is killed. Deerslayer, Harry and the settlement men arrive to time to drive the Hurons away.
