Auf der Kennedy-Highschool gibt es zwei rivalisierende Cliquen. In allen Belangen und Lebenseinstellungen sind die beiden Cliquen so unterschiedlich wie nur eben denkbar. Während die populären, reichen Luxus-Teenies unter ihrer Hauptexponentin Brooke McQueen (Leslie Bibb) den Inbegriff des gesellschaftlichen Erfolgs verkörpern, lassen es die unpopulären, weil normalen Youngsters mit Sam McPherson (Carly Pope) eher ruhig angehen. Brooke McQueen, die Anführerin der „populären“ Gruppe, ist bildhübsch und Leiterin der Cheerleader. Sie ist der Inbegriff der „Schulkönigin“, denn natürlich hat sie auch den passenden Boyfriend zu ihrem Ehrenamt: Josh Ford (Bryce Johnson), den umschwärmten Quarterback des Footballteams. Zu Brookes Freunden gehören die launische Nicole (Tammy Lynn Michaels), Mary Cherry (Leslie Grossman) und Michael Bernardino (Ron Lester), der von allen nur „Sugar Daddy“ genannt wird. Die andere Gruppe, die von Sam angeführt wird, ist eher alternativ eingestellt. Sie sind alle nicht wirklich unbeliebt, aber zu den „Coolen“ der Schule gehören sie auch nicht. Da ist zunächst Sam selbst, ein Mädchen mit geringem Selbstvertrauen und natürlich noch keinem Freund. Dazu gesellen sich noch Harrison (Chritsopher Gorham), ein eher unscheinbarer Typ, Carmen Ferrara (Sara Rue) ein dickes Mädchen mit einem großen Herzen und Lily (Tamara Mello), die manchmal etwas verwirrt scheint und eher aussieht wie ein Junge. Beide Cliquen leben in ihren eigenen Welten und versuchen den Kontakt untereinander zu vermeiden. Für Sam und Brooke kommt es allerdings zum Super-Gau: Sams verwitwete Mutter und Brookes geschiedener Vater haben sich auf einer gemeinsamen Kreuzfahrt kennengelernt und miteinander verlobt. Ein Schock für die beiden konkurrierenden Mädchen, denn nun müssen sie sich an den Gedanken gewöhnen, gemeinsam in einer Familie und unter einem Dach zu leben. Dort können sie sich nicht ausweichen. Die beiden unterschiedlichen Welten treffen aufeinander – und das ist ein schwieriger Prozess.

Im Mittelpunkt dieser Mischung aus Telenovela und Teenie-Sitcom steht die 14-jährige Emma, die mit ihrem Vater nach Miami umgezogen ist und sich mit den typischen Problemen eines Teenagers in einer neuen Stadt und an einer neuen Schule auseinandersetzen muss. Dann stellt sie durch einen Zufall allerdings fest, dass sie eine Hexe ist und magische Fähigkeiten besitzt.

Beverly Hills ist ein nobler und schicker Vorort von Los Angeles, in dem sich die Reichen und Schönen tummeln. Luxus, schnelle Autos und teure Designerklamotten gehören zum Alltag. Acht junge Teenager schlagen sich in mit den üblichen Problemen des Erwachsenwerdens herum. Dazu gehören Intrigen, Lügen und Familienprobleme. Im Laufe der nächsten zehn Jahre werden sie Beziehungen eingehen, diese wieder fallen lassen, neue schöne Menschen kennenlernen und auch nach Herzenslust intrigieren. Als Anlaufpunkt dient das Lokal „Peach Pit“, das von Nat Bussichio geführt wird.
