20 Jahre sind vergangen seitdem Ben Mears seine Heimatstadt Jerusalem's Lot verlassen hat. Mittlerweile ist er Schriftsteller, hat es sogar zum Pulitzerpreis gebracht und kehrt zurück an seinen neuenglischen Geburtsort. Dort begegnet man Ben mit Argwohn, der dort für sein neues Buch recherchieren und sich den Ängsten seiner Kindheit stellen möchte. Als er acht Jahre alt war, hat sich der Besitzer des alten Masten-Hauses das Leben genommen und soll seitdem in dem Gebäude spuken. Der Schriftsteller möchte das Haus kaufen, doch der Antiquitätenhändler Straker kam ihm zuvor und hat darin bereits eingerichtet - unter anderen mit einer sargähnlichen Kiste, die er nicht aus dem Augen lässt. Als immer mehr Leute einer mysteriösen Anämie zum Opfer fallen, kommt Ben ein schrecklicher Verdacht...
