Das Leben und Schicksal der sibirischen Familie Saweljew in den ersten drei Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts: Anton Saweljew ist schon alt genug um sein Geld in der Stadt zu verdienen. Mit dem Ausbruch der Revolution beginnt die Jagd auf den Kommunisten Anton, während Kaftanow seine Tochter demjenigen zur Ehefrau geben will, der in ihrer Gunst am höchsten steigt. Iwan und Fjodor nehmen dies genauso als Herausforderung wie Demjan Injutin, einem einbeinigen Kriegsveteranen aus dem russisch-japanischen Krieg. In den Revolutionswirren kann sich Kaftanow behaupten und die Kommunisten vertreiben, doch Anna haßt ihren Vater und entscheidet sich für Fjodor, der ebenfalls für die kommunistische Sache eintritt. Gemeinsam wollen sie aus dem Dorf fliehen. Doch die Ereignisse treiben einen Keil zwischen die drei Saweljew-Brüder - eine Feindschaft, die noch Jahre andauern wird.
