Als Keiichi Maebara in das augenscheinlich friedvolle, von Berghängen umgebene Dorf Hinamizawa zieht, freundet er sich recht schnell mit den Mädchen aus seiner Klasse an. Zusammen unternehmen sie Clubaktivitäten und genießen die Zeit in dem naturgeprägten Dörfchen. Es wird so schnell nicht langweilig, denn bald nach seiner Ankunft findet auch das größte Fest in Hinamizawa statt, das Watanagashi, bei dem die Dorfbewohner alle ihre Sorgen und Sünden symbolisch den Fluss hinabtreiben lassen können. Doch irgendetwas in dieser Idylle scheint nicht zu stimmen und schon bald beginnt Keiichi, die schrecklichsten Befürchtungen zu hegen. Welche Sünden und Geheimnisse verstecken die Dorfbewohner und vielleicht auch seine neu gewonnenen Freunde?
