Zé Pedro, the legendary guitar player of Xutos e Pontapés, is the greatest name in Portuguese rock ‘n’ roll. He was its main driving force, not only as the founding guitar player of the greatest Portuguese band ever, but also by promoting the genre as a music critic, radio broadcaster and owner of Johnny Guitar, a mythic club and concert hall in Lisbon where so many bands took their first steps.

Tashiro coincidentally meets his best friend Sugimoto in a bar very close to the apartment in which Sugimoto’s wayward wife is found dead. Although Tashiro is not a suspect in the police investigation, he is racked with guilt and confesses to his wife, Masako. In an effort to further relieve his tortured sense of guilt, he then confesses to Sugimoto. Neither his wife nor his friend can believe that he could have been involved.

The best he can do at first is stay at a shelter for poor people and look for work. In the meantime he tries to reconnect with people he knows and to avoid the attention of several shady individuals that know him. That's the layout. The mystery elements arise from the fact that he is rejected by a few, pursued by a duo of suspicious looking men, and approached by a bunch of unsavory roughnecks that know him well. Why the rejection? Why the persecution? What is the gang about? The film is parsimonious about handing out hints and clues that we need to answer those questions. The best we can do is work out hypotheses and see if they pan out at the end.

Leo is a small time crook on the road to redemption. The age old story of a broken man trying to change himself. Escape to Passion is a sleazy action-packed classic.
