Als der Arzt Peter Husak seinem Freund Jack Carver, die hübsche Krankenschwester Kate Nessen (Marg Helgenberger) vorstellt, verlieben sich Jack und Kate sofort ineinander. Was Kate allerdings nicht weiß: Jack ist ein knallharter CIA-Agent, für den Töten pure Routine ist. Als Jack in ihrem Beisein einige KGB-Agenten umbringt, verlässt Kate ihn voller Entsetzen und heiratet stattdessen Peter. Einige Zeit später gehen die frisch gebackenen Eheleute nach Aserbaidschan, um dort im krisengeschüttelten Bergkarabach für eine Hilfsorganisation zu arbeiten. Als der Krieg ausbricht, trifft auch der vom CIA geschickte Jack dort ein. Bei einem Treffen mit Peter stehen sich die beiden ehemaligen Freunde plötzlich als Feinde gegenüber.
