The Hurons succeed in capturing her father and Harry, where-upon Judith's sister Hetty, playing on an Indian superstition never to harm an insane person, feigns madness and makes an escape. Hutter, Judith, Hetty and Princess Wah-Tah return to the ark, where they ate attacked by the waiting Hurons and Hetty is killed. Deerslayer, Harry and the settlement men arrive to time to drive the Hurons away.

Ihre Zielrichtung: Die USA. Präsident John F. Kennedy steht nun vor der schwierigsten Aufgabe seines Lebens: Wenn er seine Militärs und Geheimdienste nicht von einer friedlichen Lösung überzeugen kann, steht der dritte Weltkrieg unmittelbar bevor. Die Situation scheint beinahe aussichtslos und Kennedys Bruder Robert und sein engster Berater Kenny O’Donnell versuchen alles, um einen diplomatischen Ausweg zu finden. Wachsamkeit ist gefragt, denn in diesen 13 Tagen könnte jede Entscheidung die falsche sein.

Die Geschichte der US-amerikanischen Raumfahrt erreicht einen ersten Höhepunkt, als der Pilot Chuck Yeager als erster Mensch die Schallgeschwindigkeit durchbricht. Als in der Folge die Sovjets 1957 erfolgreich ihren Sputnik-Satelliten ins All schießen, verdoppelt die US-Raumfahrtbehörde NASA ihre Anstrengungen, um ihrerseits einen bemannten Flug ins Weltall zu starten. Sieben Piloten werden für diesen Auftrag ausgewählt. Obwohl die Anzahl der Fehlversuche und der Grad der Unsicherheit bezüglich der Raketen enorm ist, wagen diese Piloten dennoch den Versuch. Dieser Mut bringt ihnen den Respekt der Öffentlichkeit ein, die ihnen fortan nachsagt aus dem Stoff gemacht zu sein, aus dem Helden sind.

Aus Werbe- und Propagandafilmen der 40er und 50er Jahre zusammengestellter Dokumentarfilm zur Informationspolitik der amerikanischen Militärbehörden über die Zerstörungskraft von Atomwaffen, dessen Bildmaterial die damaligen Stellungnahmen als verantwortungslos entlarvt. Keine reine Dokumentation, sondern durch die Montage als Satire aufbereitet, bezieht der Film seine Wirkung aus der Befürchtung, daß die Bedrohung durch Atomwaffen nach wie vor verharmlost wird.

Als er am 20. Januar 1965 zum Präsidenten der USA gewählt wird, blickt Lyndon B. Johnson zuversichtlich in die Zukunft. Zu seinen Unterstützern zählen Männer wie Martin Luther King Jr. und als Präsident der Menschenrechte will er Geschichte schreiben. Doch die Situation ändert sich abrupt, als ihm sein hockkarätig besetztes Beraterteam zu einem verstärkten Einsatz von amerikanischen Soldaten in dem seit Jahrzehnten unruhigen Vietnam rät. Als daraufhin der Konflikt mit Ho Chi Minh eskaliert, scheint es keinen Weg zurück zu geben. Widerstrebend lässt sich Johnson zu kriegerischen “Vergeltungsschlägen” in Nordvietnam überreden: Die “Operation Rolling Thunder” nimmt ihren Anfang. Als der verzweifelte Präsident versucht den Krieg, den er nie wollte, zu beenden, haben die Kriegsbefürworter unter seinen Beratern längst das Ruder in der Hand…
