Der pyrophobe Leichenbestatter Gerald Tovar Jr. (Andrew Divoff) erbt die Familiengruft und entdeckt zufällig hunderte unverbrannte Körper darin. Als er sie versehentlich toxischen Medizin-Abfällen aussetzt, erheben sich die Toten und machen Jagd auf den Leichenbestatter und seinen nach einem Job suchenden Bruder Harold (Jeffrey Combs). Doch nicht nur die beiden sind in größter Gefahr; überall beginnen die lebenden Toten Verderben zu säen und die Menschen in ihrer Umgebung zu attackieren. So kann es auf Dauer nicht weitergehen. Aus diesem Grunde setzen sich die Tovar-Brüder zur Wehr und bekommen dabei schließlich Unterstützung von einigen unerschrockenen Anwohnern. Zusammen machen sie den Zombies mit diversen Schießeisen oder unkonventionellen Waffen wie heißen Bügeleisen den Garaus. Eine Zeit lang geht ihre Taktik auf, doch dann werden sie von den Monstern immer mehr eingekesselt.
