Er lebte in einem Teil des königlichen Zoos, anfänglich gehalten wie ein Tier. Doch Gonsalvus begann zu lesen, am Hof des Königs wurde ihm Bildung ermöglicht und er immer mehr als Mensch respektiert. Dann wagte man ein Experiment: Man erwählte die Tochter einer Hofangestellten zu seiner Frau. Die Schöne und das Biest haben zueinander gefunden. Mit ihrer Geschichte sind sie Vorbild für das französische Volksmärchen "Die Schöne und das Biest".
