Auch an der Ostfront geht der 08/15-Kommissbetrieb weiter: Der überaus erfolgreiche und bei den Soldaten beliebte Chef der Artilleriebatterie Wedelmann, in der Asch, Vierbein und Kowalski eingesetzt sind, wird von Hauptmann Witterer, der bisher an der Heimatfront war, abgelöst. Dieser will es sich zum einen so bequem wie möglich machen, zum anderen endlich einen Orden bekommen. Vierbein, der anfangs sanftmütige, verträumte Junge, wird zunächst für einen Spezialauftrag in die Heimat abkommandiert. Zurück an der Front wird er Opfer des fanatischen, hasserfüllten und karrieresüchtigen Witterer. Vierbein überlebt trotz des Schutzes seiner Freunde Asch und Kowalski den Krieg nicht: Bei einer sinnlosen Panzerabwehraktion flüchtet er sich in ein Deckungsloch, über das sich ein Sowjetpanzer so lange dreht, bis Vierbein lebendig begraben ist. Asch findet bei der Leiche einen an seine Schwester gerichteten pazifistischen Liebesbrief, den er vorliest.
