Und das obwohl oder gerade weil er halb Katholik, halb Jude ist. Mit "Religious" geht er nun erstmals in Spielfilmlänge der Frage auf den Grund, was Religion eigentlich bezwecken will und frei nach dem Motto "Ich mache mich nicht lächerlich über Religion, sie macht es sich selbst" sucht er u. a. einen Ex-Schwulen, jetzt Priester mit Kleinfamilie, auf, der felsenfest behauptet es gibt keine schwulen Menschen, einen Vergnügungspark der die Auferstehung als Attraktion anbietet oder einen Prediger, der felsenfest von sich behauptet der Neugeborene Jesus zu sein. Aber nicht nur Christen müssen bei Maher dran glauben, auch Moslems, Juden, Mormonen, Scientologen kriegen ihr Fett weg.

Ausgezeichnet als bester Dokumentarfilm auf dem 'Seattle Interntional Film Festival', zeigt Autor Daniel G. Karslake mit diesem Film, wie gewisse Bibelstellen von bigotten religiösen Hardlinern schon immer perfide zur Verfolgung Homosexueller benutzt worden sind. Die Stigmatisierung gleichgeschlechtlicher Liebe mit bewusst falsch interpretierten Bibelzitaten und aus dem Kontext gerissenen Stellen hat zig Tausende von Menschen in Verzweiflung und in den Tod getrieben. Karslake beweist, dass Religion und Homosexualität sehr wohl vereinbar sind. Die Fokussierung des Films auf Eltern, die zu ihren schwulen Kindern stehen, macht diese Doku zu einem kraftvollen, höchst positiven Film, der klare Antworten gibt. Er ist provokativ, unterhaltsam und brillant!

Insgesamt ein intelligenter essayistischer Exkurs über die menschliche Vorstellungswelt, ebenso amüsant wie nachdenklich stimmend.
