Ein Sandsturm macht die Hoffnung der Väter zunichte, den Entführern zu folgen. Nach einem missglückten Fluchtversuch werden die Kinder nach Omdurman gebracht, wo Stas dem Mahdi vorgeführt wird. Der Grieche Kaliopuli, als Dolmetscher für den Mahdi unentbehrlich, will den Kindern helfen.
