Die Filmemacher und Meteorologen wollen genau dorthin vordringen, wo kein Mensch vor ihnen war: ins Auge des Sturms. Das Ziel ihrer außergewöhnlichen Mission: Sie sammeln Daten über so genannte "Twister", die mit Windgeschwindigkeiten von mehreren 100 km/h übers Land fegen. Dabei ziehen sie wie ein riesiger Staubsauger alles in sich hinein, was ihnen im Weg steht. Wer diesen Naturgewalten zu nahe kommt, begibt sich in Lebensgefahr. Trotzdem nehmen immer wieder ein paar Unerschrockene das Risiko auf sich. In gepanzerten Fahrzeugen, ausgestattet mit modernster Technik, liefern sich die "Sturmjäger" ein Wettrennen bei der Erforschung der faszinierenden Wetterphänomene.

Am 22. Mai 2011 zerstörte ein Tornado die 50.000 Einwohner-Stadt Joplin im Südwesten von Missouri. Mit einer Windgeschwindigkeit von mehr als 200 Meilen pro Stunde wütete der Mega-Sturm im Zentrum der Stadt, riss zwei Etagen des Krankenhauses ab, zerstörte Kirchen und Geschäftshäuser – ganze Stadtteile waren nicht mehr zu erkennen. Über 150 Menschen kamen ums Leben, die Verwüstungen in der Stadt waren enorm. Einen Hoffnungsschimmer für die Überlebenden war die Unterstützung der Gemeinde und Hilfsangebote aus der ganzen Welt. Die Dokumentation versucht die Tornado-Katastrophe zu rekonstruieren.

Rob Morrison ist gerade aus seinem Urlaub zurückgekehrt als er zu Wartungsarbeiten an Londons Hochwassersperre gerufen wird.
