Obwohl er für Moskau als Wunschkandidat galt, war nur wenige Monate später das Verhältnis der beiden Länder so schlecht wie seit Ende des Kalten Kriegs nicht mehr. Filmemacher Witali Manski arbeitete zu dem Zeitpunkt für einen staatlichen Fernsehsender und hatte uneingeschränkten Zugang zu Jelzin, Putin und den inneren Zirkeln der russischen Führung. Zusätzlich zu den Bildern, die sein Kameramann gedreht hat, hat Manski selbst viele Szenen mit einer eigenen tragbaren Kamera begleitet. So zum Beispiel, als Jelzin im Kreise seiner Familie die Ergebnisse der Wahlen am 26. März 2000 verfolgt, die Putin mit 53 Prozent als Präsidenten der Russischen Föderation bestätigen. Manski drehte die Vorbereitungen von Putins Team zur ersten TV-Ansprache sowie Vieraugengespräche im Kreml, in denen Putin dem Filmemacher Einblick in sein Verständnis von Macht und Führung gewährte.

Nur wenige Bücher haben den Lauf der Geschichte wirklich verändert; "Der Archipel Gulag" ist eines davon. Es gilt als eines der einflussreichsten Bücher des 20. Jahrhunderts. Autor Alexander Solschenizyn, selbst ehemaliger Lagerinsasse, gab damit den Millionen in Sowjetlagern Inhaftierten eine Stimme und offenbarte die grausame Realität des stalinistischen Unterdrückungssystems.
