Die Berliner Philharmoniker spielten Beethovens Neunte Symphonie erstmals unter der Leitung von Herbert von Karajan im April 1957 aus Anlass des 75-jährigen Bestehens des Orchesters, und mit diesem Werk weihten sie im Oktober 1963 auch die neu gebaute Philharmonie ein. 1977 hatte sich Karajan für einen Filmmitschnitt entschieden, weil er das Gefühl hatte, das Orchester verfüge über eine neue Kraft und größere Klangfülle, vor allem in Passagen wie dem langen Streicherrezitativ zu Beginn des Finales. Regisseur der Übertragung von 1977 war der 46-jährige britische Fernsehproduzent Humphrey Burton. Die Übertragung passte zu Karajans ewigem Anliegen, einem neuen Publikum in der ganzen Welt die Meisterwerke der Musik näherzubringen. Nach der Aufführung hielt er eine Ansprache vor dem Orchester, er sprach vom Musizieren als einem Symbol der Harmonie und zeigte sich glücklich darüber, dass er und seine Musiker die Neunte so präsentiert hatten, wie sie ihrer aller Meinung nach sein sollte.

Das muss eine der besten Aufführungen der Neunten Sinfonie in diesem Jahr gewesen sein. Nicht eine Spur von pathetischen Heroismus. Mariss Jansons und das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks bringen die lebensbejahenden Aspekte des Werkes zum Vorschein, die in einer Hymne von tief empfundener Natürlichkeit ihren Höhepunkt finden, aus der das Publikum innere Stärke ziehen kann.
