Any new Met production of Verdi’s beloved tragedy La Traviata would be noteworthy, but Michael Mayer’s dazzling staging, which premiered during the 2018–19 season, was doubly significant as it marked Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first performances as the Met’s Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director. On the podium for this Live in HD transmission, Nézet-Séguin leads a starry ensemble. As Violetta, the consumptive heroine fighting to find true happiness, soprano Diana Damrau delivers yet another compelling portrayal on the Met stage. Tenor Juan Diego Flórez sings his first Verdi role with the company, as Violetta’s ardent yet impetuous lover, Alfredo, and baritone Quinn Kelsey rounds out the principal cast as Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s implacable father.

During the Japanese occupation, Little Tiger, an honest cook in Shanghai, takes exception of two Chinese that pass from insult to sexual harassment against a beautiful and modest girl servant. During the fight, the pair of molesters receive help from a number of colleagues from the same martial arts school - who are in support of the Japanese - while Little Tiger is helped by young men from his own school. A major fight develops, and the cook accidentally kills one of the thugs. The Police comes to arrest Little Tiger and to close down his school, but they resist and the cook escapes. Little Tiger is now a fugitive, living in disguise. When a duel between the two rival schools is arranged in an open-air site, Little Tiger is watching disguised as an old man, but he can't resist. He takes off his false beard, declares his name, and demands to join in the competition - beating up all competitors.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Zauberflöte ist zweifellos eines der vielschichtigsten, tiefsinnigsten, kompliziertesten und daher auch am schwierigsten zu inszenierenden Bühnenwerke der gesamten Opernliteratur. Gattungstechnisch wird sie nur verständlich, wenn man sie als eine Mischung aus viererlei sieht: als philosophisch vertieftes Ideendrama mit unzähligen Verschlüsselungen und als naives Märchen, als pralle Komödie und derbes Kasperle-Spiel. Sie fußt dort, wo sich die Traditionslinien der barocken Zauberoper mit der italienischen Buffa und dem Wiener Singspiel treffen, wo alle Wunderlichkeiten denkbar und erlaubt sind. Die Inszenierung von Peter Ustinov kommt allen entgegen, die eine primär märchenhafte Umsetzung lieben, das Ambiente ist traditionell,konventionell. Sängerisch ist ein hervorragendes Ensemble aufgeboten.

Mitten im Zweiten Weltkrieg, als Paris von den Nazis besetzt ist, wird ein englisches Flugzeug über der französischen Metropole abgeschossen. Die drei Insassen konnten sich mit dem Fasllschirm retten, sind aber nun auf der Flucht vor den Deutschen, die sie suchen und gefangennehmen wollen. Zum Glück sind die Franzosen auf der Seite der Briten, daher helfen unter anderem der Maler Augustin und der Dirigent Stanislas den Gestrandeten – und gemeinsam wollen sie die Flucht aus der besetzten Stadt schaffen.

Eigentlich könnte man das Leben Hannahs als perfekt bezeichen: Im Gegensatz zu ihren beiden Schwestern hat sie es geschafft, eine funktionierende Familie aufzubauen. Diese beginnt jedoch zu zerbröckeln, als ihr Gatte Elliot sich auf einer Familienfeier in Lee, eine ihrer Schwestern, verliebt.

Als der Schwiegersohn des Präsidenten der Salzburger Festspiele tot aufgefunden wird, geht man zunächst von Selbstmord aus – doch die Frau des Toten glaubt nicht daran. Sie vermutet, dass ihr Mann ermordet wurde. Mit ihrem tollen Aussehen und etwas Charme wickelt sie den ehemaligen Polizisten Brenner um den Finger, damit sich dieser den Fall nochmal genau anschaut – zusammen mit seinem Freund Berti. Erst kurz vor seinem Tod sorgten einige pikante Details aus seiner Zeit im katholischen Kloster für Wirbel. Brenner stellt bei seinen Ermittlungen dann auch schnell fest, dass hier etwas faul ist und er selbst auch recht gefährlich lebt.
