Juni 1964 geboren sind, aber in völlig unterschiedlichen Verhältnissen. Ihren Biografien folgend, nimmt uns der Film mit auf eine bewegende und bildgewaltige Reise durch die letzten Jahrzehnte.

Der Kunstfälscher Elmyr de Hory hat Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts zahllose Meisterwerke von Meistern wie Matisse, Modigliani oder Picasso mit einer unfassbaren Leichtigkeit gefälscht und an große Museen verkauft, ohne, dass irgendein Experte seine Fälschungen entlarven konnte. Als Ende der 60er-Jahre der Schriftsteller Clifford Irving eine aufklärende Biographie über den genialen Fälscher herausbringt, ist de Horys „Karriere“ faktisch beendet, obwohl er bestreitet, seine Bilder jemals mit fremden Signaturen versehen zu haben. Jedoch entpuppt sich auch Irving als Krimineller, als er damit auffliegt, eine gefälschte, angeblich autorisierte Biographie des rätselhaften und legendären Industriemultis Howard Hughes an einen Verlag zu verkaufen. Orson Welles traf beide, de Hory und Irving, in de Horys Villa auf Ibiza und schuf ein beispielloses Vexierspiel über Wirklichkeit und Fiktion.
