Der Film schildert die – vermutlichen – Umstände, unter denen es dazu kam, dass Hauser vom Säuglingsalter an völlig isoliert in einem Versteck gefangen gehalten wurde. Daraus ergibt sich das Bild einer Intrige, in die hohe Kreise der Adelsgesellschaft verwickelt waren. Fünf Jahre nach seiner Befreiung, im Dezember 1833, starb Kaspar Hauser an den Folgen einer Stichverletzung, die ihm von einem unbekannten Täter zugefügt wurde.

Auf der sonnigen Mittelmeerinsel verhält sie sich allerdings zunächst abweisend. Stefan spürt, dass sie ihm etwas verbergen will. Misstrauisch fragt er sich, was sie mit dem Hotelbesitzer Wolf zu tun hat, einem älteren Deutschen mit Nazivergangenheit. Als Stefan und Estelle in ein einsam gelegenes Haus ziehen, kann Estelle nicht mehr verheimlichen, dass sie Heroin nimmt. Sie überredet ihn, es auch zu versuchen.

Mickey (Kevin Spacey), Eddie (Sean Penn) und Phil (Chazz Palminteri) hängen zusammen in ihrer schicken Villa in Hollywood ab. Während ihre Karrieren im Filmbusiness vor sich hindümpeln, verbringen sie den Tag mit Koksen, Sex und pseudophilosophischem Geschwafel. Obwohl es ständig Zoff gibt, können die drei nicht voneinander lassen und teilen sich außer der Wohnung auch ihre Drogen und die Frauen. Nichts scheint sie aus ihrer lethargischen Vergnügungsroutine herausreißen zu können, bis ein tragischer Unfall dem Dolce Vita ein jähes Ende bereitet...

Mike Manadaro ist ein junger begabter Fotograf, der in ärmlichen Verhältnissen mitten im Sündenbabel Brooklyn aufwächst und sich mit kleinen kriminellen Gelegenheitsjobs sein Taschengeld verdient. Als ihm ein Professor der Universität sein künstlerisches Talent in der Fotografie bestätigt, muss Mike eine schwere Entscheidung treffen. Da sein Vater ihm die Aufnahme eines Kredits verbietet, bleibt ihm nur eine Möglichkeit rasch an Geld zu kommen: Er muss lukrativere, aber auch gefährlichere Jobs für die Unterweltbosse von Brooklyn erledigen.
