Danny Rose betreut als Manager mehrere Künstler. Sehr erfolgreich ist er zwar nicht, aber für die Karriere seiner Klienten tut er dennoch alles. Dessen beste Tage liegen schon etwas zurück, doch dann eröffnet sich dem ehemaligen Star die Chance auf ein großes Comeback. Diesem Ziel steht allerdings noch ein Problem im Wege, bei dem er Danny um Hilfe bittet. Es geht um seine Geliebte Tina. Ohne ihre moralische Unterstützung aus dem Publikum bekommt Lou auf der Bühne keinen Ton heraus. Der Haken: Lou ist verheiratet. Also soll Danny die Tina auf das Konzert bringen und so tun, als wäre sie seine Freundin. Dummerweise hat die Dame jedoch Kontakte zur Mafia und so stehen bald zwei Gangster bei Danny auf der Matte. Sie wollen ihm an den Kragen, weil sie ihn für Tinas heimlichen Lover halten.

Starkomiker George Simmons befindet sich gerade auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere, als er von seiner unheilbaren Bluterkrankung erfährt. Sein Arzt eröffnet ihm, dass er nur noch ein Jahr zu leben hat. Simmons muss gerade in seiner schwierigen Situation feststellen, dass er keine richtigen Freunde hat und die einzige Frau, die er wirklich liebte, betrog. Er stellt den aufstrebenden, erfolglosen Standup-Comedian Ira als Assistenten und Mädchen für alles ein. Es entwickelt sich eine Art Freundschaft zwischen den beiden.

Der in die Jahre gekommene Schauspieler Willy Clark hält sich mit kleinen Rollen über Wasser, die ihm sein Manager, Neffe Ben Clark, kostenfrei vermittelt. Jedoch ist Onkel Clark recht anspruchsvoll und macht es seinen Mitmenschen mit seiner cholerischen Art nicht leicht. Eines Tages vermittelt Ben ein Treffen mit Willys altem Partner Al Lewis. Dieser ist im Gegensatz zu Willy ein ruhiger und besonnener Zeitgenosse. Ebendieser Charakterzug bringt Willy auf die Palme und sorgte seinerzeit, mehr als 40 Jahre zuvor dafür, dass sich die beiden zerstritten und ihr Bühnenstück abgesetzt wurde. Letztlich gelingt es Ben Clark doch die beiden Streithähne wieder zusammen auf die Bühne zu bringen, aber die Zusammenarbeit gestaltet sich ebenso schwierig, wie all die Jahre zuvor.
