Produced by WGBH-TV in Boston, THE MEDIUM IS THE MEDIUM is one of the earliest and most prescient examples of the collaboration between public television and the emerging field of video art in the U.S. WGBH commissioned artists – Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Otto Piene, James Seawright, Thomas Tadlock, and Aldo Tambellini – to create original works for broadcast television. Their works explored the parameters of the new medium, from image processing and interactivity to video dance and sculpture.

Anhand sechs bewegender persönlicher Geschichten zeigt der Film, wie es der Gruppe im Verlauf ihrer Karriere gelang, Erfolg und Beliebtheit kontinuierlich auszubauen, aber auch, wie durch die Kraft ihrer Musik eine Fancommunity entstanden ist, die rund um die Welt Menschen aller Geschlechter und Altersgruppen zusammenführt – und wie diese Musik ihnen hilft, die Widrigkeiten des Alltags zu überwinden.

Roy Orbison live im Club „Cocoanut Grove“ in Los Angeles. Orbison wird von einem Ensemble bekannter Rock-’n’-Roller begleitet, darunter Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett, J.D. Souther, Jennifer Warnes, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen und Tom Waits. Die Band im Hintergrund ist die „TCB Band“, die Elvis Presley von 1969 bis zu dessen Tod im Jahre 1977 begleitete. Das Konzert wurde komplett in Schwarz-Weiß gedreht. Es war eine Inszenierung des TV-Senders Cinemax und fand am 30. September 1987 statt, 14 Monate vor Roy Orbisons Tod. Cinemax sendete die Aufnahme erstmalig am 3. Januar 1988.
