Unter der Führung des Matrosen Wakulintschuk gelingt der Aufstand, jedoch wird der Revolutionsführer ermordet. Die Nachricht von der Meuterei verbreitet sich wie ein Lauffeuer unter der Bevölkerung von Odessa. Die Menschen strömen in den Hafen, um die Besatzung der “Potemkin’” zu unterstützen. Sie versammeln sich auf der monumentalen Hafentreppe, die direkt zum Meer hinunter führt. Diese Treppe wird zum Schauplatz des grausamen Gegenschlags des Zaren-Regimes und ging als berühmte “Treppenszene von Odessa” in die Filmgeschichte ein.
