Daher konnte sich ein Fleischer mörderischen Wohlstand erarbeiten: Regelmäßig stellt er neue Hausmeister ein, um sie bereits nach wenigen Tagen zu schlachten und portionsweise an die hungernden Hausbewohner - gegen Mais, die offizielle Geldwährung - zu verkaufen. Als neuestes Opfer ist Louison auserkoren, ein ehemaliger Clown, der zwar wenig Fleisch auf den Rippen hat, sich mit handwerklichem Geschick aber recht gut einlebt. Als Julie, die Tochter des Fleischers, sich jedoch in Louison verliebt, beginnt die Sache aus dem Ruder zu laufen.

Goldgräber Charlie flüchtet sich vor einem Schneesturm in die Hütte von Black Larsen, in der auch Big Jim, der gerade Gold gefunden hat, erscheint. Als der Sturm nachläßt, irrt Charlie umher, beobachtet in einem Dorf eine tanzende Gesellschaft und verliebt sich in die Sängerin Georgia. Später beutet er zusammen mit Big Jim dessen Goldmine aus, wodurch die beiden reich werden und Charlie schließlich Georgia heiraten kann.

Buster Keaton spielt einen jungen Mann, der beruflich Filmvorführer in einem Theater ist. Dabei wünscht er sich aber, ein echter Detektiv zu sein. Im Hause seiner Freundin baut ihm sein Widersacher eine Falle, worauf er irrtümlich als Dieb verdächtigt wird und rausfliegt. An seinem Arbeitsplatz schläft er ein und in seinem Traum wird er zum Detektiv, zu Sherlock Junior.

Charles Duchemin, Restaurantkritiker und Herausgeber des "Guide Duchemin", ist die letzte Bastion des guten Geschmacks und der feinen Küche.
