David Leans zweite Dickens-Adaption (nach "Geheimnisvolle Erbschaft" 1946) ist ein visuell aufwändiges Spektakel, ein Meisterwerk nicht nur wegen der höchst werktreuen Bildsprache, sondern auch durch Leans feines Gespür für Planung und Weitsicht, einer DER Klassiker des britischen Kinos. John Howard Davies ist sicher der empfindsamste Oliver aller Filmadaptionen des Romans. Alec Guinness als Fagin überzeugt durch kraftvoll theatralische Darstellung, übernimmt aber auch Dickens‘ fein gestrickte Ironie ...
