Kairo 1955, zehn Jahre nach dem II. Weltkrieg: Mr. Welles, der gerade an seinem neuen Buch arbeitet, erhält von Agent Krikorian die Nachricht, dass ein Deutscher namens Petersen immer noch nach dem Rommel-Schatz sucht. Kurze Zeit später trifft er im Nachtclub von Mrs. Fischer auf den ehemaligen deutschen Offizier von Brunner, der mittlerweile als tauchender Touristenführer arbeitet, und bietet ihm einen Job bei seiner bevorstehenden Schatzsuche an. Auch Sängerin Sophia, eine Angestellte von Mrs. Fischer begleitet die Expedition – und verliebt sich in den charmanten Ex-Offizier. Während der Reise trifft sich von Brunner mit dem Schatz-Sucher Petersen, der ihm berichtet, dass er einst die Koordinaten des Schatzes in einen deutschen Panzer ritzte und dieser kurze Zeit später zerstört wurde. Dieses Wissen verheimlicht der ehemalige Offizier vor Welles und macht sich alleine mit Petersen auf den Weg zum Panzerfriedhof….

Documentary about Cuban education. El planeta de los niños is not a documentary and not a feature film. Sarmiento actually filmed a documentary subject with the mise-en-scène and the cutting of a feature film. Without further ado, she takes the viewer into a world where adults would appear to have died out ; a society within which all functions and professions are held by children with deadly seriousness as if things have always been this way. Only right at the end does Sarmiento reveal that she shot the film at the 'Escuele de Pioneros' set up in Cuba in 1979, an institution which Fidel Castro gave to the children of his people to prepare themselves for a later working life. The film opens with an as-good-as-real wedding ceremony and progresses via a birth to a simulated battle ; from birth to death. The subtle irony with which Sarmiento portrays this 'Utopian' world was not understood by all German critics.

Angekommen in Ulaanbaatar bringt Urna die noch erhaltenen Teile der Geige - Kopf und Hals - zu Hicheengui, einem bekannten Pferdekopfgeigenbauer, der dem alten Instrument einen neuen Körper bauen soll. Danach bricht Urna ins Hinterland auf, um dort die fehlenden Strophen des Lieds zu suchen. Doch sie wird enttäuscht. Keiner der Menschen, denen sie auf ihrem Weg begegnet, scheint die alte Weise der Mongolen noch zu kennen …
