Pius XIII liegt im Koma. Trotz einiger unvorhergesehener, mysteriöser Umstände gelingt es dem Sekretär des Vatikanstaates, Voiello, den britischen Aristokraten Sir John Brannox auf dem Papststuhl zu platzieren. Der charmante und kultivierte John nimmt den Namen Johannes Paul III an. Zunächst scheint er der perfekte Papst zu sein, doch Johannes Paul III verbirgt einige Geheimnisse. Bald muss er feststellen, dass es alles andere als einfach ist, den charismatischen Pius XIII alias Lenny Belardo zu ersetzen, der immer noch zwischen Leben und Tod schwebt und von Tausenden von Gläubigen wie ein Heiliger verehrt wird.
