Die dreiteilige True-Crime-Miniserie „Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story“ stellt den Fall des siebenjährigen Steven Stayner in den Mittelpunkt, der im Jahr 1972 von dem verurteilten Sexualstraftäter Kenneth Eugene Parnell gekidnappt wurde. Sieben Jahre später konnte er – gemeinsam mit dem 5 Jahre alten Timmy White – entkommen und nach Hause zurückkehren. Insbesondere wird auf die folgenden Jahre eingegangen, in denen Steven mit dem erlebten Trauma und der folgenden medialen Aufmerksamkeit auf seinen Fall zurechtkommen musste und schließlich daran zerbrach. Noch schlimmer wird das Ganze, weil Stevens älterer Bruder Cary später als Serienmörder aktiv wird. Es handelt sich hier wirklich um eine amerikanische Horror-Geschichte.
