Sommer 1914: Am Vorabend des Ersten Weltkrieges reist die 14-jährige Oda aus dem fernen Berlin nach Estland, um ihre verstorbene Mutter in deren Heimat zu bestatten. Doch es ist kein guter Zeitpunkt für eine Reise. Die Stimmung auf dem adligen Gutshof Poll ist vergiftet von der privaten und wissenschaftlichen Frustration ihres Vaters Ebbo, der Haltlosigkeit ihrer Tante Milla der feindseligen Haltung der einheimischen Dienerschaft und einem Massaker an estnischen Anarchisten, das ganz in der Nähe des Hofes passiert. Doch Oda schafft es die ganze Situation noch heikler zu gestalten. Von den Anzeichen des aufkommenden Unheils unbeeindruckt, versteckt die altkluge und widerspenstige Oda einen estnischen Revolutionär inmitten des elterlichen Anwesens. “Schnaps”, wie sich der verwundete Anarchist nennt, fasziniert das junge Mädchen. Die Begegnung der beiden wird ihr Leben für immer verändern.
