Die muslimische Minderheit wurde 1944 unter Stalin von der Krim vertrieben, Ende der 80er gab es nach Protesten ein Zugeständnis von Gorbatschow. Mit der Besetzung der Krim 2014 folgen unter Putin erneut zahlreiche Repressionen. Mit politischer Willkür werden Tataren verhaftet und zu langen Strafen verurteilt. Der Film zeigt mehrere Frauen, deren Männer inhaftiert sind und mit großem Engagement versuchen, mit Klagen die Situation ihrer Männer zu verbessern, die nur sporadisch Kontakt zu ihrer Familie haben.

Return is a methodical construction of the approach of an individual towards an unseen goal, which assumes metaphorical significance. Viola moves toward the camera/viewer, pausing every few steps to ring a bell, at which point he is momentarily thrust back to his starting place, and then advanced again. Finally reaching his destination, he is taken through all of the previous stages in a single instant and returned to the source of his journey.

We see what they eat, where they sleep, and how they respond to media scrutiny, on-going trials, the shrinking of their fortunes, and the criticism of society. Central focus is placed on Hiroshi Araki, a young man who finds himself elevated to chief spokesman for Aum after its leaders are arrested. Araki faces extreme hostility from the Japanese public, who find it hard to believe that most followers of the cult had no idea of the attacks and even harder to understand why these followers remain devoted to the religion, if not the violence.
