Im idyllischen, im Westen des fiktiven Kontinents Mittelerde gelegenen Auenland wohnt das Volk der kleinen, gemütlichen, friedfertigen, menschenähnlichen Hobbits. Nicht nur, dass für Hobbits die Existenz von Drachen fraglich erscheint und Abenteuer von ihnen verabscheut werden: Der Berg Erebor, in dem der Drache mit dem gestohlenen Schatz lebt, befindet sich noch dazu in einem weit entfernten Land im Osten von Mittelerde.

I used very intricate matting, some shaped like knives. I wanted the cars to slice each other in two, creating a kind of hurdy gurdy atmosphere…an abstract rushing to and fro, going nowhere. The first half of the film is silent. The second half, a grainy dupe of the same images, has sound and is far more urgent and aggressive.” (Paul Winkler)
