Für die US-amerikanische Filmgeschichte sind Lex Barkers europäische Westernabenteuer nur eine Fußnote. Aus Anlass seines 50. Todestages erzählt der Dokumentarfilm die Geschichte einer der schönsten Männer, der je über Europas Kinoleinwände flimmerte, für den sich das europäische Kino als Glücksfall erwies und den eine gescheiterte Hollywoodkarriere über Italien nach Deutschland führte.

Die glorreiche und tragische Geschichte des amerikanischen Athleten und Schauspielers Johnny Weissmuller (1904-84), olympischer Schwimmer, Wasserballspieler und der einzig wahre Tarzan, eine archetypische Figur und ein Mythos des Kinos, des ursprünglichen Hollywood-Blockbusters (1932-48).
