Teenager Derek und sein kleiner Bruder Tobey sind neu in der Stadt und wissen noch nicht, dass man die Abkürzung zur High School über das verwilderte Gelände der mysteriösen Familie Hartley besser nicht benutzt. Das aber macht Derek nur neugierig. Gemeinsam mit dem Schulrowdy, der seinen Hund vermisst, will er das Hartley-Haus einer nächtlichen Inspektion unterziehen.
