Um auf den Mahdi Druck auszuüben, halten die Engländer in Port Said die Schwester des Mahdi gefangen. Dennoch gelingt es ihr, mit Mahdisten einen Befreiungsplan auszuarbeiten. Ein Sandsturm macht die Hoffnung der Väter zunichte, den Entführern zu folgen. Nach einem missglückten Fluchtversuch werden die Kinder nach Omdurman gebracht, wo Stas dem Mahdi vorgeführt wird. Der Grieche Kaliopuli, als Dolmetscher für den Mahdi unentbehrlich, will den Kindern helfen.
