Das Werk beginnt 1930 und endet mit der Ermordung Thälmanns im Jahr 1944. Im Mittelpunkt der Handlung stehen der Kampf um die Einheitsfront der deutschen Arbeiter gegen die Nationalsozialisten, Thälmanns Verhaftung nach der Machtergreifung Hitlers und die 11 Jahre Haft, welche er heldenhaft erträgt. Zur tragenden Gestalt des zweiten Teils wird Ännes Mann Fiete Jansen, der bereits im ersten Teil als Freund und Kämpfer an Thälmanns Seite stand. Er kämpft in Spanien für die Sache des Volkes und später in den Reihen der Roten Armee, wo er für eine schnelle Beendigung des faschistischen Krieges eintritt.

Auf Mr. und Mrs. Tweedys düsterer Geflügelfarm herrscht das hühnerverachtende Motto: Wer nichts zum Frühstück beiträgt, endet als Abendessen! Kein Wunder, dass die rebellische Jung-Henne Ginger dieser Hühnerhölle schnellstmöglich entkommen will. Zusammen mit ihren Leidensgenossinnen, der Rekord-Eierlegerin Bunty, der etwas unterbelichteten Babs, dem holländischen Technik-Genie Mac und dem greisen Hahn Fowler, plant sie die Flucht. Doch bisher wurde jeder Ausbruchversuch von der bösartigen Mrs. Tweedy, ihrem tumben Mann oder den gemeingefährlichen Hofhunden vereitelt. Erst als der amerikanische Zirkus-Gockel Rocky unvermittelt im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes auf dem Hühnerhof landet, reift in Ginger ein genialer Plan: Die Geflügel-Gemeinschaft muss einfach davonfliegen, und Flughahn Rocky soll den anderen das Fliegen beibringen!

Wallace und sein Hund Gromit eröffnen eine Bäckerei. Kurz darauf werden sie in eine Mordserie verwickelt. Als Wallace sich Hals über Kopf verliebt, behält allein Gromit einen klaren Kopf und muss den Fall von nun an allein lösen. Der junge Peter lebt mit seinem Großvater in einer von einem hohen Zaun umgebenen Hütte und hat als Spielkameraden nur eine Ente. Von einem verletzten Vogel wird Peter dazu überredet, sich trotz des Verbots durch den Großvater in den Wald zu begeben, von wo ihn der verärgerte Großvater zurückholt. Später muss Peter beobachten, wie die Ente von einem Wolf verschlungen wird. Er begibt sich erneut in den Wald, um den Wolf zu fangen...

Rentier Rudolph hat bei seinen Artgenossen einen schweren Stand, weil er eine knallrote Nase hat. Schließlich macht sich der arme Rudolph auf den Weg in eine bessere Welt. Begleitet wird er von anderen Kreaturen, die in ihren Gemeinschaften Außenseiter sind. Als sie schließlich einen Ort finden, an dem es von Ausgestoßenen wimmelt, entwickelt Rudolph den Willen, seine Situation und die der Anderen zu verbessern. Denn in Rudolph steckt mehr, als man auf den ersten Blick sieht. Auch Außenseiter haben besondere Fähigkeiten.
