Wie auch im schon im Vorgänger-"Kurzfilm" entwickelte der damals hauptsächlich der Malerei zugewandte Lynch über Stop-Motion Aufnahmen eines sich stetig weiterentwickelnden, in neue Formen und Szenarien transformierenden Gemäldes eine bewegte Sequenz. Hauptthema ist das Alphabet, bzw. das Kinderlied darüber. Die entsprechenden Buchstaben tauchen immer wieder in seltsamsten Formen und Zusammenhängen auf, wandeln sich, tanzen, fliegen, platzen, tun eigentlich alles nur vorstellbare.

Wie lautet das ABC des Sterbens? Mit dem Episodenfilm "The ABCs of Death" möchten 26 unterschiedliche Regisseure aus aller Welt Antwort darauf geben: und zwar mit 26 Horror-Kurzfilmen. Allein oder zu zweit wurde ihnen jeweils ein Buchstabe des Alphabets zugeteilt und im Anschluss mussten sie sich ein Wort dazu ausdenken, das sich mit einer Todesart auseinandersetzt. Basierend auf den Begriffen entstanden 26 gruselige Episoden und damit ein "ABC des Todes" bzw. der Todesarten. Am Ende jedes Kurzfilms, in dem eine Sterbemethode dargestellt wird, wird das Wort enthüllt, auf das die Episode Bezug nimmt. Insgesamt beteiligten sich 15 Länder an diesem Werk, das von Schulbüchern für Kinder inspiriert wurde.
