The second in Larry Gottheim's ELECTIVE AFFINITIES cycle, MOUCHES VOLANTES is, in the filmmaker's own words, "a celebration of elusive relationships" between sound and image, color and black-and-white, the moon and the waves, the aural testimony of Blind Willie Johnson's widow Angelina and the camera's illumination of a world simultaneously of and beyond the everyday. These lyrical fragments sweep in and out as with the tides; a time-based symmetry slowly emerges as the film reveals itself to be a perfect circle.

Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wird der junge dänische Pfarrer Lucas nach Island geschickt. In einer abgelegenen Siedlung auf der rauen Insel soll er eine Kirche errichten. Er heuert eine Handvoll Einheimischer als Begleiter auf dem mühevollen, nicht ungefährlichen Weg an. In Lucas' Gepäck befinden sich ein großes Holzkreuz und seine Fotoausrüstung. Wann auch immer der Pfarrer seine Kamera aufbaut, muss er feststellen, dass er sich letztlich kein Bild von dem Land und dessen Bewohnern machen kann, weil Menschen und Natur sich ihm entziehen. Zudem führt seine Unkenntnis der isländischen Sprache zu Komplikationen. Je tiefer er in die unberührte gewaltige Landschaft vordringt, desto mehr kommt er von seiner Mission ab und handelt nicht mehr nach den Grundsätzen seines Glaubens. Am Ziel angekommen, scheint Lucas sein moralisches Gleichgewicht völlig zu verlieren. Inmitten einer von Mythen und Märchen besetzten Landschaft wirkt das Holzkreuz nur noch absurd.
