Dem unglücklichen Versicherungsangestellten Alain Durieux misslingt ein Selbstmordversuch. Der Psychiater Pierre Valois testet deshalb an ihm erstmals eine neue Therapie gegen Depressionen: das sogenannte Flashing. Alain kennt daraufhin keinerlei negative Emotionen mehr, doch sein Umfeld, besonders seine Frau, reagiert mit Unverständnis auf die Dauerfröhlichkeit und fehlende Empathie des „Geheilten“. Auch Doktor Valois wird sich bald der verheerenden Auswirkungen seines Experiments bewusst.
