Der Film besteht aus vier Episoden. Neben einer Geschichte über das Unrecht, das Arbeitern durch einen Fabrikbesitzer und Gerichte zugefügt wird, werden Vorurteile und Grausamkeiten zu anderen Zeiten angeprangern: die Eroberung Babylons, die Verschwörung der Pharisäer gegen Jesus und die Bartholomäusnacht im Frankreich des 16. Jahrhunderts sollen das Elend bezeugen, das selbstherrliche Herrscher während vieler Jahrhunderte verursacht haben.

Schauspieler Norman Maine befindet sich auf dem absteigenden Ast. Gier ist ein Stummfilmklassiker aus dem Jahre 1924 von Erich von Stroheim. Er handelt von einer Frau, die nach einem Lotteriegewinn geldbesessen ihre Ehe ruiniert und ihr soziales Umfeld verliert. Das Filmoriginal war länger als acht Stunden und setzte detailgenau den Roman McTeague des amerikanischen Naturalisten Frank Norris filmisch um. Heute existieren nur noch circa zwei Stunden Filmmaterial.
