Darin beschäftigt er sich mit der Geschichte des Rassismus im modernen Amerika und greift dabei auch auf persönliche Erinnerungen an seine Freunde zurück: die Bürgerrechtsaktivisten Malcolm X, Medgar Evers und Martin Luther King, die alle drei ermordet wurden. Regisseur Raoul Peck arbeitet dieses Material in seinem Dokumentarfilm auf und verwendet dafür vornehmlich die originalen Worte Baldwins, die Ausschnitte aus dem Manuskript werden dabei von Schauspieler Samuel L. Jackson vorgelesen.
