Ein Obdachloser findet in einer Wohnung ein totes Ehepaar. Als die herbeigerufene Polizei eintrifft sind diese jedoch wieder am Leben. Der Sohn des Ehepaars Tomoe Enjō wird währenddessen von Shiki Ryōgi vor seinen Verfolgern gerettet. Er gesteht ihr nach einigen Tagen, dass er seine Eltern ermordet hatte, jedoch seine Mutter danach in der Stadt beim Einkaufen gesehen hatte. Sie fahren zu Tomoes Wohnung und Shiki wird schnell bewusst, dass das gesamten Gebäude einer Illusion unterliegt und treffen auf den Magier Sōren Araya, der Shiki bereits erwartete. Mikiya Kokutō geht einer Spur nach, wonach in einem Wohnblock regelmäßig Schreie zu hören sein sollen, von denen Nachbarn immer wieder berichteten. Von seinem Cousin bei der Polizei erfährt er von einem Obdachlosen, der behauptete in einem Gebäude die Leichen eines toten Ehepaars vorgefunden zu haben. Als der Magier Cornelius Arba eine Ausstellung von Tōko Aozaki, aufgesucht wird beiden klar, dass gefährliche Dinge im Gange sind.

Bei seinem Transport wird ein wertvolles Artefakt, das kostbare Königssiegel, gestohlen. Als kurz darauf Kommandant Toshiro Hitsugaya spurlos verschwindet, wird er natürlich des Diebstahls verdächtigt. Die Soul Society ruft laut nach seiner Gefangennahme und fordert seine Hinrichtung, doch Ersatz-Shinigami Ichigo Kurosaki widersetzt sich dem Aufruf und beschließt, Hitsugayas Unschuld beweisen. Aber kann er Hitsugayas Motive lüften, bevor seine Ehre und sein Leben dahin sind? Und wird das Geheimnis des Siegels offenbart, bevor die Soul Society daran zerbricht?

Looping, chugging and barreling by, the trains in Benning's latest monumental film map a stunning topography and a history of American development. RR comes three decades after Benning and Bette Gordon made The United States of America (1975), a cinematic journey along the country’s interstates that is keenly aware “of superhighways and railroad tracks as American public symbols.” A political essay responding to the economic histories of trains as instruments in a culture of hyper-consumption, RR articulates its concern most explicitly when Eisenhower's military-industrial complex speech is heard as a mile long coal train passes through eastern Wyoming. Benning spent two and a half years collecting two hundred and sixteen shots of trains, forty-three of which appear in RR. The locomotives' varying colors, speeds, vectors, and reverberations are charged with visual thrills, romance and a nostalgia heightened by Benning's declaration that this will be his last work in 16mm film.
