Shot on Mount Tamalpais, a spatial matrix replaces temporal causality with contiguous space. A view of landscape is taken apart, to be reconstituted through memory. The grid, a reference to the “veil of threads” invented by Albrecht Dürer as an aid for perspective drawing – to transfer vision to a sheet of paper – is used for an opposite effect – to disperse a landscape across time. The viewer is asked to remember the space as it passes and reconstitute it from memory, actively connecting the image across space and time.

In this experimental animated short, Ryan Larkin (Walking) creates a series of figures who move across the screen and disappear into a hole. Eventually, the hole metamorphoses into a bridge, on top of which stands the young man from whom the others figures originated.

Maybe that's why there's more than a hint of homoeroticism in the way the wrestlers oil themselves up with grease, making sure to cover every inch of their bodies so that their opponents will be unable to get a grip. Pialat's closeups emphasize the men's muscular bodies jammed together and sliding off one another, posed in intimate, twisted arrangements, struggling desperately for a grip on each other's bodies. Arms are jammed down pants, one of the only places there's some potential for a handhold, and the whole thing is very suggestive and sensual, a form of intimate male contact that's sanctioned as a show of strength and masculinity.

Ein Jahr, nachdem eine Gruppe Teenager dem Tod auf ebenso rätselhafte Weise enteilte, wie sie später von jenem wieder eingeholt wurde, droht sich das Geschehen zu wiederholen: nach einer Vorahnung verhindert die junge Kimberly, dass sie selbst, ihre Freunde sowie ein paar weitere Autofahrer auf dem Highway von einem Baumtransport aus dem Leben gerissen werden. Als schon wenige Tage darauf der erste Glückspilz einem seltsamen Unfall erliegt, wird Kimberly mulmig. Sie sucht Hilfe bei der letzten Überlebenden vom Vorjahr.

Die Welt ist von rätselhaften, scheinbar unverwundbaren Kreaturen eingenommen worden, die durch jedes noch so kleine Geräusch angelockt werden und sich auf die Jagd begeben. Lediglich einer einzigen Familie gelang es bisher zu überleben. Der Preis hierfür ist jedoch hoch: Ihr gesamter Alltag ist darauf ausgerichtet, sich vollkommen lautlos zu verhalten, denn das kleinste Geräusch könnte ihr Ende bedeuten.

Nachdem seine alleinerziehende Mutter bei einem Autounfall ums Leben gekommen ist, zieht Teenager Lucas (August Maturo) bei seinem auf dem Lande lebenden, älteren Bruder Tom (Mike Manning) ein. Tom ist wenig begeistert von der Situation, da er nicht weiß, wie er mit Lucas und seinen pubertären Problemen umgehen soll. Anstatt mit ihm zu reden, praktiziert er allenfalls mal „Slapface“ mit ihm – ein Spiel, bei dem sich die Teilnehmer abwechselnd ohrfeigen, bis einer von ihnen aufgibt. Auch in der Schule findet Lucas keine Freunde. Eines Tages erfährt er von einer lokalen Legende, der Hexe Virago. Lucas beschließt, das Monster in sein Leben einzuladen. Und obwohl Virago zu ungeheurer Gewalt fähig ist, erweist sie sich tatsächlich als zuverlässige Begleiterin für den einsamen und verwirrten Jungen. Auf ihre ganz eigene Art und Weise hilft sie ihm, seine Probleme zu bewältigen …
